Sami Zayn dismissed the threats, but later realized how complicated his life had become. The penultimate presentation of the blue brand before Survivor Series was an important one.

This week’s edition of SmackDown also featured the final two matches in the opening round of the SmackDown World Cup and advanced the intriguing feud between Bray Wyatt and LA Knight.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut.

Owens is the ultimate equalizer

Sheamus, accompanied by Butch and Holland, told McIntyre that a 20-year rivalry creates an unbreakable bond. Sheamus said there was no one he’d rather go to war with than McIntyre, who served as best man at his wedding. McIntyre accepted the offer, referring to Sheamus as his “brother”. McIntyre was about to reveal the last member of their team before Zayn interrupted him.

Zayn said The Bloodline didn’t deal with who McIntyre and the Brawling Brutes recruited. He promised to go through Butch in the opening round of the SmackDown World Cup as a taste of what was to come at Survivor Series. Sheamus teased that Zayn would be surprised when their surprise fifth member was revealed.

Jey and Zayn argued backstage about whether or not Zayn overcompensated in his verbal encounter with their opponents at Survivor Series. Jimmy ordered the team in Reigns’ absence, insisting that they needed to cut loose and shut down the mystery opponent.

SmackDown World Cup (Round 1) — Def. Sami Zayn via pinfall after landing the Bitter End. Butch worked his superior wrestling technique on Zayn early in the match, turning his limbs and shooting for quick pins. Zayn turned the tide with a reverse powerbomb. After an extended beatdown, Butch stopped Zayn’s momentum by catching him mid-air with a hard elbow. Outside, a fight broke out between the opposing teams. Zayn got the upper hand on Butch and set him up for a match-ending Helluva Kick. Jey entered the ring in an attempt to escape Sheamus and accidentally tackled Zayn. Butch took advantage of the distraction and pinned Zayn with a Bitter End for the win.

The brawl continued after the match, leading to the arrival of Reigns. The WWE Undisputed World Champion speared Butch and Holland before locking eyes with McIntyre. A distraction from Sikoa allowed Reigns to track down McIntyre. Reigns and Sheamus stared each other down before trading blows. Zayn’s interference opened the door for Reigns to lay Sheamus out with a Superman punch. Bloodline stood victorious until a familiar theme song filled the arena. Kevin Owens made his triumphant return from a rumored injury. Owens went toe-to-toe with Reigns before coming face-to-face with his best friend, Zayn. Reigns tried to ambush Owens with a Superman punch, but Owens countered with a stunner that pinned the champion. WWE packed so much into this last segment. Both Zayn and Jey take the blame for losing the match, stepping up their efforts to curry favor with The Bloodline. Reigns’ late arrival and dominant takeover carried gravitas, befitting his status as top dog. The staredown between Reigns and Sheamus teased a future world title match that should be a barnstormer. More importantly, WWE lived up to expectations for Owens’ submission to the WarGames match. His friendship with Zane adds intrigue to the otherwise straightforward, unlikely rivalry.
