Connections it’s everything. Some are lucky to have it easier than others, these are the nepotism babies of the world. As of late Vulture The article points out that the entertainment industry is full of “nepo babies” who are born into families that are already rich or connected — or both. Being born into the right family, marrying into the right family, or simply attending a prestigious school with the right alumni can put one ahead of the rest of the pack. Game worlds are no different.
Gaming has its share of nepotism babies, here are nine characters who got where they are on the backs of those they know.
9. Bowser Jr. — Mario series
When your father is one of the most powerful and feared beings in the entire Mushroom Kingdom and beyond, you will go further than the regular Koopa. Bowser Jr. owes everything to his father, including his position in the Koopa army. What qualifications does a child have to lead a military force other than his father in charge? Bowser is known for giving his kids roles they didn’t earn and Mario must be sick of dealing with those kids.
8. Haru — Persona 5
Haru Okumura shares her name with the company Okumura Foods. And that’s because he is the only child of the company’s CEO, Kunikazu. However, she is a rebellious nepo baby and joins forces with the Phantom Thieves, even helping to change her father’s heart.
7. Rufus Shinra — Final Fantasy VII
Speaking of people who are going to inherit big companies, here is Rufus Shinra. But while Haru tries to fix the problems her father caused, Rufus wants to gain more power than his own. Even after Rufus took the title of President of Shinra Corporation, he constantly uses this power to control those around him. It seems he may be compensating for the fact that his father didn’t love him enough.
6. Jin Sakai — Ghost of Tsushima
Born into the ruling samurai class as part of the Sakai Clan, Jin was well connected from the second he was born. This gave him the opportunity to train with the best swordsmen in the country and become a powerful samurai himself. Connections aren’t always everything, and Jin proves his worth in battle during the Mongol invasion of Tsushima Island.
5. Byleth – Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Sometimes it hurts to face that someone you like is nepotism baby. Sorry everyone Emblem of FIRE fans but byleth is a baby nepo. Their father, Geralt, is well acquainted with the head of the Church of Sirus and a world-renowned merchant. While Byleth has a talent for battle strategy, their father’s connections help them land a teaching position at the Officers Academy with no prior experience.
4. Emily Kaldwin — Dishonored
Emily is the rightful heir to the throne of the Isles and the child of Empress Jessamine and Royal Protector Corvo Attano. It doesn’t get more nepotism baby than being a royal. Emily didn’t have the easiest life though considering she lived through two coup attempts. While the other leaders who tried to take her place were bad enough, it does beg the question of whether or not Emily could do a better job of taking care of the people she rules.
3. Atreus — God of War
Perhaps the biggest nepotism baby in the nine kingdoms, Atreus owes his parents a lot. On one side he has Kratos, the Spartan god-slayer and one-time god of war, and on the other he has Frey, one of the last Jotun. Kratos and Frey give Atreus plenty of special magic and power, making him the center of a world-changing prophecy. Just because his mom said he would be important, even the ruler of the Norse Gods, Odin tries to trick him. Of course, Atreus acts like an entitled teenager about everything. Typical nepo babies!
2. Zagreus — Hades
Nothing frustrates Zagreus more than being a baby of nepotism. As the son of the god of the underworld, Zagreus was constantly given jobs and responsibilities that he had not earned. He is often just mean to them too! But being a nepo baby also means you want to stay in the good graces of those who give you connections. Zagreus, on the other hand, wants nothing to do with his dad.
1. Bruce Wayne – Batman: Arkham series
Whether it’s comics, movies, or video games, Bruce Wayne will always be a nepo baby. Yes, his parents died, but they left him one of the largest fortunes in the DC universe. Some might argue that he uses this fortune for good, funding Batman’s crusades. Others would argue that maybe he should spend it on some therapy and then channel it into restoring Gotham through methods other than beating people up.
