After Microsoft delayed the two highest-profile exclusives from 2022, Redfall and Starfield, we thought we’d learn about their potential, actual release dates by now.
But this has not happened. Instead, we turn to a new report from Jez Corden at Windows Central, where his sources say that the current target is an early May 2023 release for Redfall, which would put it within the general window of “first half of 2023 ” as Microsoft previously said.
It would be nearly a year late for Arkane’s Redfall, which was originally supposed to come out sometime in late summer 2022. Some leaks during development worried about its appearance, but it’s unknown if that had anything to do with its delay . Redfall is a four-player, co-op Borderlands-ish open-world game about vampire hunters with special ability kits and weapons, a departure from Arkane’s usual.
Microsoft is betting big on both late 2022 games Redfall and Starfield to set up a big year for Xbox that has been supposed to happen last year. They’ll be two of the first major titles from a newly acquired Xbox studio, with Starfield having the weight of the world on its shoulders in particular as a huge, mainstream Bethesda release. It’s also supposed to be released in the first half of 2023, though as time goes on, the more I wonder if they could actually push it a whole year past the original November release date and make it their big fall holiday release instead 2023.
It’s not like the Xbox has one bad generation, at least not compared to the early years of the Xbox One. They won Metacritic’s publisher of the year in 2021, which saw the release of Microsoft Flight Simulator, Psychonauts 2, Age of Empires IV, Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite. But 2022 was just… extremely barren due to delays, best evidenced by The Game Awards, where Microsoft was nominated for next to nothing, while Sony and Nintendo both had multiple games up for multiple awards.
I’m more confident that Starfield is a big hit than I am Redfall, which always seemed odd to me, but Arkane generally doesn’t disappoint, and if the game does have Borderlands echoes mixed with Arkane’s unique style, it sounds very wonderful for me. A May release also seems good given how busy February/March 2023 will be.
