Matthew Perry says Zac Efron refused to play a younger version of himself

  • Matthew Perry has said that Zac Efron turned down an offer to play a younger version of himself again.
  • The two stars previously worked together on ’17 Again’.
  • Perry is working on a new movie he wants to direct.

Matthew Perry has recently come into the limelight as a series of illuminating extracts from his memoirs reveal an insight into the ‘Friends’ star’s life over the past few decades.

Some of the most surprising moments in the book see Perry explain his battles with addiction over the years. While promoting the book, he even recalled a time when he was taken right back to a treatment center after filming the “Friends” episode where Chandler and Monica got married.

But the actor recently discussed the upcoming projects he has in the works while speaking to SiriusXM’s Jessica Shaw.

Perry explained that he has written a new film in which he originally intended to star as the lead, but realized that he needed a much younger actor to play the lead role and would have a smaller role.

He said: “I finished a script that we’re out with some people. I want to direct it. I have a small part in it. I wrote it for me and then I realized I’m 20 years old to play it. So we’re trying to cast the leads now .”

When asked who his ideal choice would be, Perry said: “Well, it was Zac Efron. But he said no. So we have to find someone who says yes. And that’s going to be a whole new experience for me. I’m directing a movie I think I’ll be good in. I hope I’ll be good.”

The actor didn’t say why Efron turned down the offer, but he’s been in high demand from studios since his “High School Musical” days and will next be seen in A24’s “The Iron Claw” playing wrestler Kevin Von Erich.

Audiences will remember Efron playing a younger version of Perry in 2009’s “17 Again,” in which Mike O’Donnell (Matthew Perry) returns to his 17-year-old self (Zac Efron) after an awkward conversation about his regrets . in life. So it’s only natural that Perry immediately thought of Efron again for what could be a spiritual sequel to “17 Again.”

Perry teased a few details about the project, confirming that it’s a romantic comedy and that “Parks and Recreation” and “Ingrid Goes West” star Aubrey Plaza was almost on board as a love interest.

But when it comes to the actor’s real-life love life, Perry recently told SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen that he’s “done” using dating apps after calling off his engagement to fiancée Molly Hurwitz.
