Leftists blame each other after record month of female murders

Spain’s ruling Social Democrats and the leftist Podemos party are blaming each other after the country saw a record number of murders of women in December.

Spain’s Equality Minister Irene Montero, a member of the populist leftist Podemos, called for a crisis commission earlier this month after announcing that five women had been murdered in December as a result of sexist violence, a number that rose to eight earlier this week. Wednesday when the meeting took place.

Since the encounter, three more women have been killed across the country, including a nearly nine-month pregnant woman in Escalona who was stabbed to death by her ex-partner, bringing the total to a record eleven.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs for Equality and Gender-Based Violence, Ángela Rodríguez Pam, another member of Podemos, blamed the “failure of all institutions, placing some responsibility on the Ministry of the Interior, which contributes to the Integrated System for Monitoring Cases of Gender-Based Violence (VioGén ), which monitors women at risk of violence.

Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE), later announced that police would do more to protect the more than 30,000 women in vulnerable situations at VioGén, particularly the 723 known to be in high level – risk of harm, El Mundo References.

Defense Minister Margarita Robles, meanwhile, hit back at Podemos’ criticism and spoke about the controversial “Only yes is yes” law, which has reduced the sentences of convicted sex offenders and freed some. The law was originally designed so that victims of sexual assault simply had to say they did not consent, rather than prove violence or intimidation.

“I don’t agree with what Podemos is saying and I have to tell you with great respect that maybe the law of yes is yes has not given an adequate answer to the situation we are experiencing,” Minister Robles said.

Robles added that the law “had a very good philosophy, which is to protect women, but when we end the year with this situation, where there are more people released from prison than we would like and when we see that violence is escalating , it is not good to blame anyone and we should all do self-criticism. Something is wrong and we all have to take our share of responsibility.”
