Agents in this area began to see a noticeable increase in crossings and arrests starting in May 2022. The numbers continued to rise throughout the rest of the year, with the exception of May.
During the past four months (August to November), Swanton Sector agents arrested 1,142 migrants. That’s more than the total number of immigrants apprehended during the entire fiscal year 2022, which ended on September 30.
The growing trend of migrants crossing the Canadian border in the Swanton sector appears to be continuing in December.
In early December, Swanton Sector agents working the border near North Troy, Vermont, rescued several groups of migrants from freezing conditions, Breitbart Texas reported. One of the incidents involved an immigrant family, including young children.
Federal prosecutors are aggressively pursuing legal consequences for smugglers who work in this sector.
Prosecutors in New York secured convictions against two men who smuggled eight immigrants into the U.S. in October 2022, according to a tweet from Swanton Sector Chief Patrol Agent Robert Garcia.
Two men were recently convicted of attempting to smuggle a total of 8 people into the US illegally on October 8 near Champlain, New York. Both face up to 10 years in federal prison.
