Girl killed after truck pulling float during North Carolina holiday parade

A young girl was killed when she was struck by a truck pulling a float in a North Carolina holiday parade, police said. The truck driver was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless operation, improper equipment, unsafe driving and carrying a weapon in a parade, police said.

According to the Raleigh Police Department, the incident occurred around 10:14 a.m. local time when the truck driver lost control and hit the child, who was participating in the parade, “at low speed.”

“The child was seriously injured. Despite the life-saving efforts of medical personnel, the child died as a result of his injuries,” police said.

Neither the child who was killed nor the driver have been publicly identified.

According to CBS Raleigh affiliate WNCN-TV, members from CC & Co. Dance Complex, a dance school located in Raleigh, said the parade float was directly in front of the crash. One of the dance faculty members told the report that the girl who was hit was a fellow dance student.

“We are still in shock as we write these words to you. The events of this morning have devastated us. We also know that many of our young people witnessed this tragedy, and that is also difficult to understand,” the dance group said in a statement. posted on Facebook.

“We never expected to experience a day like today and the only thing that gets us through is the tremendous love and support we’ve seen expressed among the CC & Co. dance family,” he added.

“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of the young woman who lost her life today in the Raleigh Christmas Parade,” said Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin. he tweeted. “Our prayers are with her family, friends and the dancers of CC & Co. The community is here for you as we try to understand and process this shared tragedy.”

Three people were in the truck at the time, and it was also towing a float with “multiple participants,” police said. No one else was injured during the incident, police said.

The parade was halted and eventually canceled after the crash.
