Erling Haaland asked about the Kylian Mbappe rivalry and whether it will be the same as Ronaldo vs Messi

Erling Haaland has opened up about his so-called ‘rivalry’ with Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe in a fascinating new interview.

The Norwegian striker, 22, has made an impressive start to the Premier League following his long-awaited £51.5m summer move to Manchester City.

He is currently on course to become the third player to win the Golden Boot in his first season in the top flight after scoring 18 goals in 13 Premier League games.

And as a result of his good form, Haaland is being touted by many to spark a Messi-Ronaldo-style rivalry with another top striker – Kylian Mbappe.

Haaland, who will no doubt enjoy a welcome break throughout this winter’s World Cup campaign, was recently asked about the matter in an interview with Viaplay.

Speaking to former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby, he spoke about a number of topics, including his relationship with City manager Pep Guardiola and the records Haaland is aiming for.

But it was Haaland’s reaction to a question about Kylian Mbappe that piqued our interest.

“It’s impossible to say,” said the City forward. “I don’t like to compare myself to others. I think you have to be your own player when it comes to that, so I don’t like to compare or anything with that.

“I think the media has been doing this with Ronaldo and Messi for the last 10 years and I think they are putting pressure on each other. I think it was positive.

“Barcelona and Madrid against each other. It was the perfect rivalry. But I don’t think about that, honestly.”

Last year, Kylian Mbappe said Haaland was not yet at his level, saying he needed to show more longevity before he could be branded as football’s next big star.

“It’s his second year, we know him. It’s the beginning for him. I’m happy for him, for what he’s doing,” Mbappe told Esquire.

“I’ve played up front, I’ve played on the left and on the right,” he continued. “In all humility, I don’t think everyone is capable of switching positions like this every year and maintaining a great performance at the highest level.

“This did not fall from the sky. If I talk about the baggage I was given in adolescence, it’s all there.

“I have been able to work on my weaknesses, but above all to perfect my strengths, because I was always told that through your strengths you will win.”

Mbappe admitted that he is still nowhere near the level of Messi and Ronaldo.

In fact, he spoke of the two players with absolute respect, calling them “incomparable”.

“Everybody knows. If you tell yourself you’re going to do better than them, it goes beyond ego or determination: it’s a lack of awareness,” he stressed.

“These players are incomparable. They have broken all the laws of statistics. It’s been ten, fifteen great years.

“You always compare yourself to the best in your sport, like a baker compares himself to the best bakers around him. Who makes the best croissant, the best pain au chocolat?

“I watch the games of other great players to see what they do. I know how to do that, but can the other guy do it too? I think other players watch me too. I think that pushes footballers to raise their game. “

Do you think Mbappe vs Haaland could be the next Messi vs Ronaldo?
