A fan of CD Projekt Red’s upcoming RPG Cyberpunk 2077 makes a surprising discovery when comparing Night City to San Francisco.
It’s been a while since CD Projekt Red’s troubled release Cyberpunk 2077and fans now had time to compare Its map with those of other games and, in a recent case, with the actual city of San Francisco. Thanks to these comparisons, it has become apparent that the seat of corporate dystopia in the distant future is not as big as it seemed. Night City may be dense, but in terms of overall area it’s surprisingly compact.
This should come as no surprise. when the game was released nearly two years ago, it was riddled with bugs and was quickly written off by some as a major disappointment. Few believed he could ever match his incredible legacy Witcher trilogy previously helmed by developer CD Projekt Red, and a smaller map seemed to be the least of the fanbase’s worries. Fortunately, Cyberpunk 2077 has come a long way since then, but the overall size of Night City remains in question.
As pointed out by Reddit user u/seashellvalley760 at Cyberpunk 2077 subreddit, Night City is completely small compared to anything in the real world. In fact, when superimposed on a map of modern San Francisco, it hardly takes up a fifth of the city. This could perhaps be explained by Night City’s unprecedented verticality, but is most likely a result of the game’s current design limitations. In case it is confirmed recently Cyberpunk 2077 The sequel will take place in Night City, there is definitely scope for expansion. However, for now, any serious civil engineering achievements will either be the work of dedicated modders or arise as part of the upcoming Phantom Liberty premium extension.
The city of San Francisco has appeared in video games on more than one occasion, although these open worlds were likely not much larger than they appear in Cyberpunk 2077 when the large Badlands sections of the map are calculated. Titles like Watch Dogs 2, Driver: San Franciscoand even Horizon: Forbidden West offered new interpretations of the real Bay Area world, and, while impressive, the real thing has almost certainly surpassed them in terms of size.
With all of that in mind, this comparison probably wouldn’t have gained as much traction as it didn’t Cyberpunk 2077sudden revival of its popularity. It is mostly rejected by established people Cyberpunk Edgerunnerof the anime series, the game seems to have a bright future ahead of it, despite the numerous setbacks it faced at launch. Perhaps all the added hype will encourage CD Projekt Red to attempt an even bigger open world in the sequel.
Cyberpunk 2077 is now available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
