Destiny 2 is only two weeks away from the release of Season 19, which currently has no name, no theme, or anything outside of the sandbox/economy/PvP changes that Bungie has detailed.
The question now is whether, for the third season in a row, Bungie is going to keep the release of a new season of Destiny 2 in complete secrecy, revealing nothing about what it will be like until the day. For Season of the Haunted, it was clear that Bungie wanted to keep Leviathan’s return under wraps, but then we got next to nothing about the pirate-themed Season of Plunder before its release.
Now? At least some early indications are that this might happen again, even if we’re now in the weird situation here where we know a lot more about the plot of Lightfall than we do about the season that started in two weeks.
Two early indicators seem to say we’re not going to get anything sooner. On this week’s TWAB, DMG said they couldn’t even show the new Trials gear because they didn’t want to reveal the seasonal icon Still, the barest hints of what a new season could focus on, though something like say, a SIVA icon or something would be a pretty big giveaway (don’t hold your breath on that one).
Second, there will be a cutscene at the end of the season that will play sometime at the end of Plunder. It could be the final reset on Tuesday. It could be the last reset of the weekend. Heck, it could be seconds before the new season starts. But what I’ve heard (no spoilers) is that the new cutscene features a significant plot event, and if this is true, it would be another reason why they might not want to say anything until this is revealed in the game. If it debuts during the season finale reset, maybe that means at least a trailer or something a week before, but who knows.
I haven’t watched the new cutscene, but based on what we know, some ideas for the next season could be:
- Something about the remains of Nezaretz, which we have collected but need to perform some ritual. This could be reviving the entity itself or merging it with an existing character.
- There were hints that maybe Eido would gain powers/transform through something like this.
- We still need to wake Osiris, who was previously possessed by Savathun, now in a coma, because we know he’s going to rise for Lightfall, since he appears in the promotional materials for this expansion. Nezaretz could theoretically inhabit him to wake him up, which would be his second possession in two years, so I’m not so sure about that.
- We have to find some way to get to Neomuna, or even hear about it in the first place. The Witch Queen expansion revealed that Rasputin knew about a secret human colony, which is indeed Neomuna, we’ve since learned, so it’s possible she’ll be involved in the next season.
I don’t really like listening nothing about an upcoming season, especially three seasons running, so hopefully we can break that pattern now. And if it’s tied to some kind of end-of-season reveal, I’d say it might bump them up a bit so they don’t have to be in the final week. But we’ll see what happens. Next week is Eliksni district cleanup, so probably nothing until next week.
